Frequently Asked Questions

How can I use LiDAR to provide operational insights?

Whether it is used before, during or after a situation, LiDAR can be an effective tool for law enforcement and public safety organizations to incorporate into their decision-making process. LiDAR is an effective tool because it captures physical environments, providing law enforcement a detailed digital 3D model to analyze for current operations or have on hand for future reference.  Law enforcement can use LiDAR to capture vehicle accident scenes, crime scene evidence and high value locations for pre-incident threat assessment. LiDAR can also provide operational insight through the use of change detection. Mobile LiDAR is easy to operate and can quickly scan scenes, providing decision makers another tool to for them to use in their daily operations.

I currently use LiDAR for law enforcement, so how is Emesent Hovermap better?

While there are many LiDAR scanners available, Emesent Hovermap’s mobile mapping feature provides a high level of accuracy and detail without the need to be stationary or repositioned throughout the scan. Mobile mapping is contactless, meaning measurements are taken without the need to physically touch or manipulate evidence. Hovermap works in the dark and does not require ambient light to capture points and is able to operate without the use of GPS. Using a mobile scanner, law enforcement can rapidly record a scene, capturing evidence in its exact location prior to further investigation, reducing errors of measurement through traditional methods and preserving the integrity of evidence of the investigation.

What training is needed to use Emesent Hovermap?

With an intuitive design and streamlined workflow, learning how to use the Emesent Hovermap is relatively easy. Users can become familiar with mobile mapping (hand scanning, backpack/vehicle mounted) in one day. Learning how to employ Hovermap via drone or with more advanced features such as RTK will take more time. Training is available through online modules, in-person or a combination of the two.

What are the technical requirements for processing Emesent Hovermap data?

Data scanned with Emesent Hovermap will be processed using Aura, Emesent’s processing and visualization software. Recommended system requirements are:

  • Windows 10: Pro, 64 Bit
  • Intel i7 Core CPU: 7th generation (minimum), Intel i9 CPU (recommended)
  • RAM: 32 GB (minimum), 128 GB to 256 GB  (recommended, depending on scan duration)
  • Hard Disk: SSD or NVME hard disk, with 6 GB free space for installation (minimum 200GB of free space for scan storage)
  • Screen resolution: 1920 x 1080 (minimum), 4K (recommended)
  • Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 1060 (minimum), NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, or better (recommended)
  • Storage: High-speed USB 3.1 storage drive, with a minimum of 128 GB storage for scan transfer
What unmanned systems is the Emesent Hovermap currently integrated with?

Emesent Hovermap is currently integrated with the following unmanned aerial systems:

  • DJI M210, M300, M350 drones
  • Freefly Astro drone
  • Boston Dynamic quadruped “Spot”
Where can I use the data taken from Emesent Hovermap? What software can the data be used in?

Users can process their point cloud data in Emesent Aura and generate various industry recognized LiDAR file formats such as LAS, LAZ, PLY, DXF and e57. Users can visualize the data in Aura or other 3rd party software such as Pointerra. LiDAR data can be used in geospatial, CAD, building information model (BIM), and many other analysis applications.
