GX1: Topographic Road Survey – Bozeman MT, USA

Scanning a "featureless" environment can be tricky, unless you're using Emesent SLAM.

Case in point? This long, straight 250 meter stretch of road in Bozeman, Montana had very little on either side, just a few buildings at either end.

Traditional SLAM triangulates the scanner's position using features in the environment, so areas like this are challenging and can accumulate significant drift. But Emesent's proprietary SLAM technology optimizes continuously and dynamically, resulting in the clean, straight topographic point cloud you see here.

This scan was captured in just 6 minutes with the Emesent GX1 connected to a local base station and mounted on a survey pole for the 500 meter round-trip walk.

This dataset contains two scans - one with, and one without RTK - demonstrating the results that are possible with Emesent SLAM, even without the assistance of RTK.

See the video below for an animation and scan highlight, and download the dataset pack for yourself.
