Emesent supercharges Hovermap data transfers with up to 80% faster offload speeds

Emesent, a global leader in autonomous digital mapping, has delivered major gains to LiDAR scanning workflows, slashing data transfer times by up to 80% and reducing file storage requirements by at least 85%.

“Raw LiDAR data is notoriously large in size,” said Emesent co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer Dr Stefan Hrabar. “By compressing and optimizing this data, the transfer time is significantly reduced. Customers will feel the difference in the way they can now work with Hovermap.”

Significantly, Emesent has reduced data size while maintaining data quality and accuracy, which means users can start processing their captured data sooner without compromising on quality.

Emesent’s flagship LiDAR scanner the Hovermap ST-X captures over a million data points per second. While high-resolution clarity is often a customer requirement that drives file size, the time taken to download the raw LiDAR data can significantly limit work productivity.

According to Dr Hrabar, it is very common for surveyors to generate raw LiDAR scan files that are 10-50 GB in size each. By achieving very high levels of data compression onboard Hovermap, Emesent shortens typical data offload times which in turn helps solve a critical workflow bottleneck.

“You can say goodbye to delays caused by data offloads,” Dr Hrabar said.

In tests undertaken by Emesent, a sample 10-minute scan which previously produced over 11 GB of raw data and took 4 minutes to transfer off Hovermap is now reduced to just over 1 GB and transferred in just 44 seconds.

This enhancement particularly helps Hovermap ST-X users capturing high density datasets, users conducting multiple daily scans or those dealing with extensive data sets. It also benefits anyone who archives their raw data files.

These recent improvements are supported in Emesent’s simultaneous release of Hovermap software Cortex, processing software Aura, and mission planning app Commander. Users will need to install the latest versions of all three applications to take advantage of the new compression technology and a number of other updates.
