Emesent appoints Christofer Catania to board, affirms company focus on mining industry transformation as key pillar to global growth

Emesent, developer of autonomous SLAM-based mobile surveying solution Hovermap, has expanded its board, inviting mining industry executive Christofer Catania to join.

With mining sites historically driving rapid adoption of Hovermap for surveying inaccessible and GPS-denied environments, and the sector remaining a key focus in Emesent’s aggressive growth strategy, the appointment aims to deepen connections between Emesent and the industry.

A recent finalist in Australia’s 2024 Executive of the Year Awards in the Mining and Energy category, Mr Catania, who is currently CEO of mining consultancy firm MEC, brings extensive experience from corporate administration and diverse sectors within mining – including zinc, lead, iron ore, copper, bauxite, gold, silver, minerals sands and coal – to his new role at Emesent.

Emesent board chairman Mike Zimmerman commented that the inclusion of an industry specialist was a key consideration in expansion of the board. “As a technology start-up, it made sense to back Emesent with expertise in building a business from the ground up, to help the leadership team navigate those early years of investment, deal with rapid growth and guide corporate governance,” said Mr Zimmerman. “As Emesent matures, however, it is crucial to inject specialist customer and industry-centric experience into the mix, and I’m confident our recent appointment of Christofer Catania will do just that.”

According to Emesent CEO Charles Miller, the previous board composition had served Emesent extremely well in building the business into what it is today.

“The addition of Christofer will help provide a global industry perspective that ensures even greater understanding of our clients’ needs and offer a strategic view on the global and technological trends that impact them the most.”

In the six years since co-founders Dr Stefan Hrabar and Dr Farid Kendoul commercialized their research at Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Emesent has seen increasing traction of its mobile 3D data capture, processing and visualization solutions in new markets across Asia, Europe and the Americas. Outside of mining, use cases for Emesent’s technology have extended into sectors such as construction, engineering, forestry, and public safety.

Resource businesses – especially those in the underground mining sector – have long understood the value that data generated by Emesent’s Hovermap provides in ensuring continuity and safety of site operations. Emesent’s ability to deliver accurate and actionable data in extremely challenging, GPS-denied surroundings has transformed the way teams understand their working environments, are able to quickly address common operational hazards, while accessing better quality data for project planning and future risk mitigation.

“I’m excited by the prospect of bringing my expertise to the board of Emesent and would like to thank everyone involved in the selection process,” said Christofer Catania. “Emesent is already doing so many things right. I hope my contribution will help the business deliver on its ambitious targets – not just in mining, in other sectors as well.”

Christofer Catania joined the Emesent board 25 November 2024.
